Team USA edges Czech Republic in Five Nations battle

Wisconsin’s Zach Stepan notched two assists and Tim Davison played steady on defense in Team USA’s 5-3 victory over the Czech Republic in Five Nations tournament action on Wednesday.

The first period was scoreless until Czech Martin Matejcek scored on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Europeans a lead they would hold through the period. USA outshot Czech 8-5 in the stanza.

Second period was all USA, as they would score three times in the period.

USA wins U17 exhibition opener at Five Nations

Team USA got a goal and an assist from Wisconsin’s Zach Stepan and goalies Brandon Hope (12) and Jimmy Howe (22) combined for 34 saves as USA defeated Switzerland 6-3 in exhibition play Monday at the U17 Five Nations tournament in Huttwil, Switzerland.

Jordan Masters scored on a wrister from the left face-off circle at 8:14 of the first to give USA a 1-0 lead that would stand through the period. Riley Barber received an assist on the play. USA outshot the Swiss 13-8 in the period.

Paulsen to step down at Rice Lake

Rice Lake boys hockey coach Keith Paulsen is stepping down from his post to take a position as an assistant coach with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League, the team announced via Twitter on Wednesday.

Paulsen, who spent seven seasons as the head coach at Rice Lake and led the Warriors to the 2009 state semifinals, will coach under former Eau Claire North grad and UW-Eau Claire player and coach Luke Strand. He put together a 58-96-4 career record at Rice Lake.

Thomas named as Ashwaubenon head coach

Ryan Thomas has been hired by Ashwaubenon High School to lead the WIAA boys hockey team this winter after the resignation of Coach Jay Boxer.  Thomas, a former Appleton United assistant coach, is owner and operator of Total Hockey of Northeast Wisconsin, which is housed at the Cornerstone Ice Center, home of the Ashwaubenon Jaguars hockey team.

 Thomas has coached at many different age levels, including the co-op Appleton School District United team. He has coached in the Wisconsin Elite League, as well as the AAA midget minor and midget major programs for the Green Bay Jr. Gamblers. He has also volunteered his time with various camps and clinics at the mite thru Bantam levels.

Select 15 Player Development Camp wrap-up

Four Wisconsin players concluded six days spent at the Select 15 Player Development Camp in Rochester, New York this week.

  • D Ian McCoshen (Hudson, Shattuck), 0g-1a
  • F Jason Reynolds (Notre Dame Academy), 2g-4a
  • D Will Butcher (Madison Caps), 0g-5a
  • D Travis Wood (Hudson), 1g-0a

Reynolds was among the leading scorers on his Navy team, which led the tournament in goals scored with 36 in five games.

Reynolds, Butcher (Purple), and Wood (Grey) all played on teams that finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. McCoshen’s White team won one of five games, also losing once in OT.

Select 17 Player Development Camp wrap-up

Five Wisconsin players recently completed the USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp held in Rochester, New York.

  • Jakob Batcha (Jr. Admirals), 3g-1a
  • Saxton Soley (Eau Claire Memorial), 123 min, .819 save %, 5.28 GAA

Batcha performed in the camp All-Star game but did not score.

Drewiske outing shows kids a great time

If you walked into the Hudson¬†Hockey Arena¬†early¬†last Saturday afternoon, you would have seen Hudson native and current Los Angeles Kings player Davis Drewiske¬†speaking into a microphone at center ice, introducing NHL and college players that were about to participate in the Davis Drewiske Youth 3-on-3 tournament to raise money for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

If you would have turned your gaze 90 degrees to the right, you would have seen dozens of young skaters, ages 7-14, literally chomping at the bit to get on the ice and interact with the pro and college players.

And by the end of the day, it was hard to determine who had more fun–the adults or the 158 kids that took part in the activities.

Five Wisconsin players recently finished competing at USA Hockey’s¬†Select 16 Player Development Camp in Rochester, New York.

  • Jason Ford (Waunakee), 0g-0a
  • Zach Stepan (Balsam Lake–Shattuck St. Marys), 1g-0a

Davison and Stepan were chosen to play in the camp All-Star game, but neither notched a point in the contest.

“It was very fun,” said Davison. “I thought I played pretty bad the first couple of games, but I rebounded and started to play pretty well towards the end.”

Baur tabbed as Al Welling Scholarship recipient

Brett Baur of Marshfield was named as the 2009-10 winner of the Al Welling Scholarship award. The award honors the late Welling, who was one of hockey’s great ambassadors as a hockey official based in Madison.

Baur plans on attending UW-Madison and studying business.

SPASH in market for varsity coach after Salienko resigns

Although it has been a few weeks since Mikhail Salienko announced his resignation from the head coaching position of the SPASH (Stevens Point Area Senior High) Panthers, the Wisconsin Valley Conference team is still looking for a head coach to fill the spot.

Salienko–a native of Riga, Latvia–amassed a 44-23-2 record in three seasons at SPASH, including a state tournament berth in 2009.

Davis Drewiske to hold youth 3-on-3 tournament

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Davis Drewiske will host a 3-on-3 youth hockey tournament on Saturday, July 10 at the Hudson Hockey Arena. Drewiske is a Hudson native and was a key part of the University of Wisconsin team from 2004-08.

Teams will include five youth players and one NHL player. NHL players scheduled to appear are Drewiske, Jake Dowell (Chicago), Brian Elliott (Ottawa), Adam Burish (Chicago), Tom Gilbert (Edmonton), Robbie Earl (Minnesota), Matt Greene (Los Angeles), and Peter Harrold (Los Angeles).

Cost is $100 per player which includes ice time; off-ice skills training with Dean and Pete Talafous of Total Hockey; personalized jersey and t-shirt; and photos and autograph opportunities with NHL players.

Games will be played between 1pm-6pm. There will also be a live band, auction, and 50-50 raffle from 8pm-midnight. For a $10 donation, enjoy the beer/food tent.
