McFarland upsets third-ranked Stoughton

McFarland High School Hockey Senior Sean Sweeney picked a great time to score his first career varsity goal.¬† He dumped a shot past goalie Andrew Martin with 40 seconds left in regulation as the Spartans upended the undefeated state-ranked Stoughton Vikings 2-1 tonight at the McFarland Community Ice Arena.¬†¬† Sweeney took control of the puck in front of the crease and slid it through Martin’s pads as hundreds of Spartan fans roared in celebration.¬† Tyler Kroneman and Jordan Lewis were credited with assists on the play.¬†

Martin vacated the net in the remaining seconds of the game as Stoughton added a sixth attacker.  But McFarland held off the Vikings to capture their fourth win in a row and first win in the Southern Badger Conference this season.  The Spartans, which won only three games last season, improved its overall record to 7-4.

Stoughton jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 13:28 of the first period when Dillon Gavazzoni found the back of the net off assisting passes from Riley Zehner and Jake Howell.  McFarland came back 27 seconds into the second period as Kyle Komplin scored off a rebound shot by teammate T.J. Klement.   A holding penalty against Matt Mosso and an interference call on Komplin gave Stoughton a five to three skater advantage for 1:23 midway through the second period, but the Vikings were not able to score.

Martin saved 14 shots for Stoughton, while Corey O’Hearn was credited with 30 saves for McFarland.

McFarland has another tough task coming up Sat. Jan. 17 when it plays another state ranked team, Madison Edgewood at the Madison Ice Arena.
